WHY COUNSELLING?
At some point in life, most people find themselves experiencing situations, thoughts or feelings which cause them difficulties. When this happens to young people it can be exhibited in unhappy or challenging behaviour and becomes compounded by an absence of emotional awareness and vocabulary. This often adversely impacts on home, school and social life.
Children and adolescents need the time and space to be heard, understood and helped towards a mentally and emotionally healthy future. I am specifically trained to work with young people aged between 4-24, and as appropriate, their families, to enable them to show and share their feelings and experiences. This allows overwhelming states to be externalised, contained, and safely worked through, empowering them to understand their emotional life and find their own solutions and resilience.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR VISIT
I encourage talking through a range of creative methods: expressive arts, play and sand-tray are used to facilitate communication, help explore underlying issues and together move towards an increased understanding of the young person's emotional health.
My approach is integrative which means I can flexibly draw on several theoretical orientations to meet the need of the young person. My training has primarily been in humanistic and psychodynamic counselling, but I also apply theory and skills from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Transactional Analysis and existentialism as required. An understanding of current neurobiological research underpins all work.

FEEDBACK FROM YOUNG CLIENTS
It (counselling) has made me more aware of some things I struggle with.
I generally feel like I’ve had a weight taken off of me because I’ve been able to talk about stuff…I feel stronger and see a path ahead of me…I think I can sympathize more with myself and am nicer to myself overall.
It just felt welcoming…Nicola is nice, so good to talk to…I could just say the truth without being judged.
Friendly and welcoming…Nicola allowed myself to be more open/comfortable when talking about feelings.
